- 18 steps
Before you leave
Whether you need a permit at all, and which one, depends entirely on your citizenship.
- 22 steps
Your first three months
EU/EEA citizens don't register until they cross the three-month mark; non-EU nationals register much sooner, as part of collecting their permit.
- 36 steps
After you're registered
Banking, health insurance and your driving licence all depend on having an OIB and a registration certificate or residence permit in hand.
- 42 steps
Steps for the children
School enrolment runs on its own clock; the child benefit has a residence-length condition that catches new arrivals out.
- 52 steps
If you are buying property
Optional - skip if you are renting. EU citizens buy on equal terms except for islands and agricultural land; non-EU citizens need a reciprocity agreement and the Ministry of Justice's consent.
11 of the 20 steps are checked against an official source, with the date it was checked. The rest depend on your own circumstances, or are practical guidance no authority publishes - each step says which.

Things people don't expect about moving to Croatia
The three-month mark is the real deadline, not your arrival date
EU/EEA citizens don't register on arrival - they only have to register temporary residence once they pass three months in Croatia, and then within 8 days of that three-month point. Showing up at the police station in week two gets you turned away with nothing to do yet.
The digital nomad permit is a dead end if you want to stay long-term
It's issued for up to a year, cannot currently be renewed or extended from inside Croatia, and a new application after it expires needs a 6-month gap outside the country first. Don't build a multi-year plan around it without a fallback route.
Doplatak za djecu (child benefit) generally needs 3 years of Croatian permanent residence first
Unless an EU coordination rule or asylum/protection route applies to you, the standard child benefit is not something you can apply for the month you arrive - non-citizens normally need an uninterrupted approved permanent residence of at least three years.
