- 14 steps
Before you leave
Visa-free entry is unusually generous for many nationalities, but check yours specifically - the rules are not uniform and have changed more than once recently.
- 21 step
First few weeks after you arrive
Georgia moves fast on paperwork once you're in the room, but almost everything still runs through the Public Service Hall and the Revenue Service.
- 32 steps
First three months
Opening a bank account and deciding whether to register as a 1%-tax individual entrepreneur are the two things most people underestimate.
- 42 steps
Steps for the children
International and Georgian school options both exist, with very different costs and enrolment timelines.
- 52 steps
If you are buying property
Optional - skip if you are renting. A property purchase over $150,000 also opens a residence-permit route of its own.
4 of the 11 steps are checked against an official source, with the date it was checked. The rest depend on your own circumstances, or are practical guidance no authority publishes - each step says which.

Things people don't expect about moving to Georgia
Visa-free does not mean documentation-free from January 2026
Since 1 January 2026, anyone entering Georgia visa-free or on a tourist visa needs proof of travel medical insurance covering at least GEL 30,000 with no deductible - airlines and border officers can refuse you without it.
The 1% tax only covers income earned while you are physically in Georgia
Small Business Status gives qualifying individual entrepreneurs a 1% tax on turnover, but that rate is for Georgian-sourced income - work done for a foreign client while you are physically outside Georgia can be taxed elsewhere instead.
Visa-free terms are genuinely different by nationality and have recently tightened
Citizens of around 94 countries get up to a year visa-free, but 17 nationalities now need a valid GCC visa or residence permit to use that route, China is capped at 30 days, and Ukraine's allowance was recently cut from 3 years to 1 - check your own nationality's current rule rather than a general figure.
