- 17 steps
Before you leave
What you need before departure depends almost entirely on whether you're an EU/EEA citizen or everyone else.
- 22 steps
First 10 days after you arrive
EU/EEA citizens have a short, hard deadline just to report where they're staying - it's not the same thing as registering your residence.
- 37 steps
First three months
Residence registration, health insurance and a bank account all slot in here, each with its own timing.
- 42 steps
Steps for the children
School enrolment has a quirk worth knowing about before you assume it doesn't apply to you yet.
- 52 steps
If you are buying property
Optional - skip if you are renting. The old residence-based restrictions on farmland were struck down by the Constitutional Court in 2019, which makes this one messier to research than it looks.
7 of the 20 steps are checked against an official source, with the date it was checked. The rest depend on your own circumstances, or are practical guidance no authority publishes - each step says which.

Things people don't expect about moving to Slovakia
Reporting your arrival and registering your residence are two separate deadlines
You must report that you've arrived within 10 days, full stop - that's just a short notice of your address. A longer stay (over three months) triggers a second, different step: registering your residence, due within 30 days after that three-month mark. Treating the first notice as the whole job is the most common slip.
Compulsory schooling is tied to permanent residence, not to being a child in Slovakia
The legal duty to enrol a child only bites once the family holds trvalý pobyt (permanent residence), which most newly arrived movers don't have yet. Schools still take children on temporary residence in practice, but don't assume the legal obligation (or the fallback protections that come with it) applies from day one the way it would for a Slovak family.
Freelancing runs on a different registration from employment
A trade licence (živnosť) is a separate process with its own office and paperwork, not a variant of the employee steps. If you're coming to freelance or run a one-person business, check the živnosť route specifically rather than assuming the employment steps cover you.

Moving to Slovakia from an EU country, or from outside the EU
The steps differ depending on where you're moving from. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally register locally with no visa required; moving from outside the EU usually means a visa or residence permit arranged before you travel.
