Things people don't expect about moving to Montenegro
Assuming owning an apartment automatically gives you the right to live in Montenegro long-term
Buying a built unit lets you apply for a temporary residence permit on that basis - it is not an automatic residency grant. Since 17 January 2026, the registered property must clear a minimum tax-assessed value of EUR 150,000 (EU/EEA/Switzerland nationals are exempt), and the permit is reviewed and renewed like any other.
Confusing 'buying a building' with 'buying land' as a foreigner
Foreigners can generally buy apartments, houses and other constructed units without special restriction. Buying bare LAND - agricultural, forest, border-zone or protected-area land - is a different legal regime, can require additional approvals or reciprocity with your home country, and carries more title risk. Get a local lawyer to check the cadastre, urban-planning status and any reciprocity issue BEFORE signing anything.
Not registering your address with the police within 24 hours
Montenegro requires anyone staying anywhere in the country - including your own purchased property - to register your stay within 24 hours of arrival, using Form 1 at the local police or tourist organization.
