- 18 steps
Before you leave
What you need before departure depends almost entirely on citizenship - EU/EEA and third-country nationals start from very different points.
- 23 steps
Registering once you arrive
Hungary's own deadline for EU/EEA citizens is 93 days, not the 90 days people assume - and the address card you'll need for everything else is no longer automatic.
- 35 steps
First three months
Tax number, bank account, health insurance and your driving licence all depend on being registered and holding an address card.
- 42 steps
Steps for the children
School is compulsory from age 6, and the family allowance has to be actively claimed.
- 52 steps
If you are buying property
Optional - skip if you are renting. Ordinary residential property is straightforward for EU buyers; agricultural and forest land is a genuinely different and more restricted regime.
8 of the 20 steps are checked against an official source, with the date it was checked. The rest depend on your own circumstances, or are practical guidance no authority publishes - each step says which.

Things people don't expect about moving to Hungary
The address card is not automatic any more
As of February 2025, the lakcímkártya (official address card) is not issued together with your registration certificate or residence permit by default - you have to specifically ask for it, and almost nothing else (bank account, tax number, health insurance) works smoothly without it.
EU citizens still have a real deadline, just a slightly odd one
There's no visa, but if you're staying more than 90 days you must register with OIF by the 93rd day after entry, not the 90th - missing it is still an immigration offence, not a formality.
Farmland is restricted for everyone, including other EU citizens
Ordinary houses and flats are open to any EU/EEA buyer with no permit at all. Agricultural and forest land is a separate legal regime - even EU citizens need to show farming qualifications and register with the Chamber of Agriculture, and most non-EU buyers are barred outright except by inheritance.
