- 18 steps
Before you leave
Whether you need a visa or permit at all depends entirely on your citizenship - EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and everyone else start from very different places.
- 28 steps
First three months
EU/EEA citizens can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180, but registering your residence and declaring your address are both separate legal duties once you intend to stay longer.
- 32 steps
Steps for the children
School enrolment and family benefits run on their own timelines, alongside everything else.
- 42 steps
If you are buying property
Optional - skip if you are renting. Latvia's investment-residency routes have just been overhauled, and agricultural/forest land carries its own restrictions regardless.
10 of the 20 steps are checked against an official source, with the date it was checked. The rest depend on your own circumstances, or are practical guidance no authority publishes - each step says which.

Things people don't expect about moving to Latvia
Public healthcare is not automatic the moment you move here
Latvia's full package of state-paid care has for years been tied to social insurance contributions (being employed and paying into the system), not simply to living here. A reform tying eligibility to declared residence was still working through parliament in late 2025 - confirm the current rule with the NVD directly rather than assuming you're covered from day one.
Declaring your address is a separate legal duty from registering your residence
Getting a PMLP registration certificate does not automatically declare where you live (deklarētā dzīvesvieta). They are two different registers, both compulsory, and skipping the second one carries its own fine.
The real-estate 'golden visa' route closed on 15 September 2026
The long-standing residence-by-property-purchase and residence-by-bank-deposit routes are gone under Latvia's new Immigration Law. If you were planning to buy your way into residency, that door has shut - and the route meant to replace it (a state investment fund) isn't operational yet.
