- 110 steps
Before you leave
Spain is strict about document formalities. Arriving without them is the commonest reason people get sent away from a counter.
- 21 step
First weeks after you arrive
The town hall registration comes first. Most other things ask to see it.
- 314 steps
First three months
Residency, social security and healthcare, in that rough order.
- 44 steps
Steps for the children
School places are allocated regionally and the timing rarely matches when you move.
- 55 steps
If you are buying property
Optional - skip if you are renting. Spain's buying costs and ongoing taxes surprise foreign buyers more than the purchase price does.
21 of the 34 steps are checked against an official source, with the date it was checked. The rest depend on your own circumstances, or are practical guidance no authority publishes - each step says which.

Things people don't expect about moving to Spain
NIE and empadronamiento are two different things
The foreigner ID number (NIE) and the local council registration (empadronamiento) are separate, and you'll likely need both for different purposes.
August is close to a dead month
Many offices run reduced hours or close for stretches of August. Avoid planning anything time-sensitive then.
Banks sometimes want proof you're already in the system
Some banks ask for things only the NIE process gives you, creating a chicken-and-egg loop - ask your bank directly what they'll actually accept before you rely on it.
